IT Management Plan of the FBM (PFBM)

Description and objectives

IT is a complex cross-cutting rapidly evolving field which has a direct influence on the fulfillment of the objectives of the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM), which affects most activities. To control its global dimension, it appears necessary to strengthen the collaboration between the different departments.

Pooling of resources, exchange of information, sharing of knowledge and standardization of procedures are a way to join forces and to work more effectively in order to meet the needs of increasingly demanding and diverse users. This common IT strategy must be framed by principles and rules to be operational.

It follows the IT Management Plan of the FBM (PFBM), an initiative of the FBM IT Platform, whose objective to federate the IT organization of our faculty and to propose academics solution according to the needs of each user. The objectives of the IT Management Plan of the PFBM are:

To provide a common IT infrastructure (based on the resources of UNIL's IT Center);
To standardize the management of the academic IT equipment;
To develop common basic rules of use, which can be extensible by unity and adjusted according to the particular needs of each one;
To encourage dialogue between IT teams (knowledge sharing and problems solving) and to promote coordination between them;
To solve the IT problems of users;

Members

The following departments or units have currently signed the Membership and Support Agreement for the FBM IT Platform. They support the development and participate in the implementation of the FBM IT Management Plan:

The IT Management Plan of the FBM includes a set of documents, basic principles and rules to guide policy and the IT organization of the FBM.

Activity reports and satisfaction survey

Activity reports

For the purpose of transparency, the FBM IT Service publishes its activity report each year.

Satisfaction survey

Regularly, a satisfaction survey is sent to users who can evaluate IT at the FBM. Then the results (summary) are published on the IT Service's website. The full evaluation report may be requested to the FBM IT Service.

Rules and directives

The IT Management Plan of the FBM (PFBM) is based on the policy of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and of the Centre Hospitalier et Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV). It completes existing services and core IT services and offers FBM users specific and complementary services. The PFBM includes transversal IT projects and a set of documents, basic principles and rules to guide policy and the IT organization of the FBM.

FBM IT Service (Si)

Mission

The mission of the FBM IT Service (Si) is to offer local IT services based on existing resources at UNIL and the CHUV (hardware and software infrastructure). It provides IT services to the UNIL community of researchers (members of the teaching staff, members of the intermediate staff, assistants) and to the administrative and technical staff of the departments that have signed the Membership and support agreement to the FBM IT Platform.

Areas of activity

The FBM IT Service's areas of activity are following:

Computer installation and repair	Software	Servers and FBM applications
Documentation and formation	Inventory	Projects and development

Services

The IT Service offers the following services:

IT support of proximity in the departments situated on the Bugnon-Epalinges area,
Purchases of IT equipment, installation and configuration of FBM computers,
Access management to FBM resources,
FBM web applications adapted to the needs of the Faculty and/or facilitating the work and the organization of the departments,
Technical maintenance of the Micropolis computer room for teaching and of the PyRAT's IT equipment situated on the Bugnon-Epalinges area,
IT projects to improve the quality of the FBM IT Platform.

The FBM IT Service does not replace the Central IT Services (Ci) or the CHUV Information system (DSI), but complements their services to the specific needs of the Faculty. It ensures dialogue between Faculty users and the various IT teams at the Ci and the CHUV DSI.

It is made up of local IT managers, who provide support to users, and specialists in infrastructure, application and project management.
