Senior consultant ophthalmic surgeon and Associate Professor in cornea and refractive surgery

 at the Jules Gonin Eye Hospital (JGEH)

The Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital (JGEH) is part of the Fondation Asile des Aveugles, a private institution which provides diagnosis, treatment and care for eye diseases. The JGEH includes specialised medico-social units for visually impaired adults and children while ensuring academic research and training activity. By its missions, the hospital, including inpatient wards and outpatient clinics, is affiliated with the University Medical Centre of Lausanne and the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne.

Fundamental and clinical research is assigned to the Vision Sciences Research Centre led by the Director of research. Fundamental research focuses on one side on the development of stem cell and genetic therapies for retinal and corneal diseases, on the pathophysiology of age-related degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and on the other side on the neurophysiological mechanisms of perception and visual rehabilitation. Clinical and applied research is supported by the biobank and the clinical investigation centre and its activities focus on the areas of adult and paediatric ocular oncology, medical retina and uveitis, and the development of novel surgical instruments as well as innovative surgical techniques in cornea, glaucoma and retina.

The cornea cluster brings together medical and surgical cornea, refractive surgery and the contact lens service. The appointee’s main task will be to promote the pursuit of his/her own clinical activities and develop translational research in cornea and refractive surgery at the Jules Gonin Eye.

Desired profile:

  • Federal medical degree (or Mebeko equivalent), MD or MD-PhD
  • Specialist title (ISFM or Mebeko equivalent) in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery
  • Longstanding clinical background in medical and surgical cornea and refractive surgery and with fellowship
  • Strong background in ophthalmology and eye surgery
  • Previous leadership of large research programs supported by external funding in the field of cornea and refractive surgery
  • Successful proven abilities in creating and maintaining multidisciplinary collaborations and networks
  • Successful proven experience in management, incl. clinical governance, human resources and finance
  • Academic knowledge of faculty rank with proven practice in pre and postgraduate teaching
  • Proficiency in French (level at least B2, C1 ideally) or ability to acquire it quickly - and English. Fluency in German and / or Italian is an
