Flies lack NAMPT, a crucial enzyme for the synthesis of the metabolite NMN. Due to its absence, NMN was thought to be negligible in injury-induced axon degeneration. In our article, we identify NMN as a key contributor: lower levels of NMN attenuate axon degeneration for months while higher levels promote faster degeneration in Drosophila. Enjoy reading our preprint.
